N&W and VGN in 1912--Two items: Paving, Steam shovel

Paving Around Public Square
    Work on the pavement around the public square is being pushed under the direction of the present council. This work will be far superior to the pavement on Mercer and Main streets. The base on which the pavement on these two streets is laid consists of sand, mostly sand, while that around the public square is of solid crushed limestone. The limestone is hauled here by the Virginian from Giles county and this extra cost will render this part of the pavement more costly probably than that already laid down but will lost twice as long without repairs.
[The Princeton Power Company's streetcar line along Mercer and Main streets between the courthouse (public square) and the Virginian Railway station probably offered a smoother ride.]

Steam Shovel Arrives
    The large steam shovel of the Norfolk and Western has arrived at Toms Creek where it will be used by the railway company loading cinders to be used in ballasting the track.  Robt. Davis will have charge of the steam shovel and Walter Clark will take Mr. Davis' place looking after the section work on this section.

[It's hard to visualize how important cinders were for ballasting track many years ago.]
