MAY BECOME RECEIVER FOR D., T. & I. ROAD
------
Superintendent George P. Johnson Said to Have Been Offered Position--Bondholders Want Him
It was learned here yesterday that George P. Johnson, general superintendent of the western division of the Norfolk and Western, has been tendered the position of receiver of the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railway. According to the information at hand, Mr. Johnson is considering the matter and may accept the place, provided satisfactory arrangements for the future can be made. The report, while not confirmed by Mr. Johnson, who left the city yesterday morning, appears to have some foundation.
The Detroit, Toledo and Ironton has been in the hands of a receiver for about two years and recently the bondholders arranged a plan whereby the road would be sold. It is understood the sale, which was to have been made next month, has been postponed until next January, but in the meantime it is understood the bondholders will ask the court to appoint Mr. Johnson receiver, and if he accepts this place he will receive the backing of a firm of New York bankers who will finance such work as will assist the road in its present difficulties.
The Detroit, Toledo and Ironton railway extends from Detroit, Mich., to Ironton, Ohio, and has a branch line extending east of Jackson. Altogether the road has about 436 miles of track, but it forms a link between the Norfolk and Western and other connections and an important territory.
