I am pleased to say that the long sought after "VIRGINIAN DAY" at the
Virginian Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia will actually happen
and the date is Saturday, September 24. While some details are still not firm
the event will focus on displays of Virginian artifacts and collectibles
with knowledgeable hosts to describe the history and operation of each VGN
piece in the yard. These include: the combination operator's shanty from
Ellett, Virginia now painted in correct colors, open, furnished and manned
to depict it in operation in the 1950's; Virginian's steam locomotive number
4, the sole remaining Virginian steam locomotive; Class EL-C, General
Electric rectifier, number 135, a member of the last type of new locomotives
Virginian acquired in 1956 and 1957; Virginian caboose 321, class C-10, built
in 1949 by St. Louis Car Company; the Virginian Room featuring displays of
VGN collectibles from personal collections; the Virginian Gallery with
items from the museum's collection; and a privately owned, recently restored,
VGN Sheffield motor car, built in 1921, equipped and manned as though in
service in the mid 1950's in a "living history" style presentation.
Former Virginian men will be the guests of honor that day and, along with
VGN historians, will be available to describe features of the equipment and
to relate stories of their work days.
