N&W in 1911--Featured in ad

I remember, in Bluefield, that the smell of coal & steam mix smoke was always a welcome thing for me, especially in the Winter time when the weather was falling , but then , us young "whippersnappers" just thought that was life, and good times. My Mom didn't care for the cinders on her Monday morning laundry, or on our Sunday dress clothes. Bluefield, is situated in a West to East valley with an almost constant breeze and no humidity, the smoke didn't last long.

"Clean Mountain Air" ad doesn't mention the hundred of steam engine movements per day. :-)

Which brings me to the real question: was Bluefield, or Williamson "smokey", or did the wind blow smoke away from town?
