In the steam days they pushed all the way from Roanoke to Winston-Salem.as you were dipping down and climbing out of river valleys all the way. The final climb was out of the Dan River valley south of Pine Hall thru Walnut Cove to the top of the hill at Fulp.. The pusher power was then run back to Roanoke as a double header on the next northbound. During periods of heavy mainline traffic and power shortages, I remember double headed K-1's on time freights, but usual power was Y6's on time freights and Z's on the local and Payne switchers.
