OK I understand the questions. Most 518 cabs in service, (there are  still 
a few N&W 518 still floating around as N&W 518xxx. Example of one  is NW 
518600 assigned to local service Roanoke to Fieldale and Fieldale to  
Martinsville locals.) have been re-numbered 555xxx. I know of none 555xxx that  were 
renumbered into 518xxx. Also all 518xxx 500 and 600 series were reworked in  
the 1970's into C31P while the 555xxx series was built new as C32P. As to 
why NS  did this I could only guess. Probably to get all cabs in one number  
series.
