I have a photo of my grandfather standing in front of a steam locomotive. The location is said to be Bristol, VA/TN. I am trying to date the photo and identify the locomotive and hope that some one may be able to offer assistance. I believe, but can not confirm, he worked for the N&W. The locomotive carries the number 2001 and the only other discernable markings are the letters US on the coal/water tender. That leads me to think the photo was taken in the 1918-1920 time frame when the railroads were taken over by the government during WW I. I have seen other photos from this time period where the only markings were USA on the coal tender. In looking through the N&WHS photo archives for both the N&W and Virginian lines, the locomotive resembles a Class Y-2 but not exactly. Unfortunately I don’t know if the Y-2 existed in the 1918-1920 time frame. More than happy to send along the photo to anyone who might be able to identify it and confirm my general
thoughts about the date.
