IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
Inspect Rock Crusher Location
President L. E. Johnson and General Manager N. D. Maher, of the Norfolk and Western, passed through the city yesterday on a trip to points in the field. They will return today on train No. 2. During the present trip they will inspect a proposed location for a rock crusher at Glen Alum and will also stop at Welch to look over the depot situation with a view to forming some plans which may result in a new station for that place. The town of Welch is planning a number of improvements and these will be inspected with a possible view to building a station which will be as well constructed as the section in which it will stand.
[Welch's downtown suffered a devastating fire in January 1911.]
------
New Freight Depot
A number of improvements are being made at Devon. A big freight station is being built at the junction of the Big Sandy and Cumberland and the Norfolk and Western which is 70 x 100 feet. The work is in charge of John Carmell and is being pushed rapidly.
[As readers of the N&WHS journal, The Arrow, will remember, articles on the Big Sandy and Cumberland by James B. Blackstock and Charles "Bucky" H. Wilson, Jr., in the Jul/Aug 2006 and Jan/Mar 2007 issues describe how the narrow gauge BS&C became the important Buchanan Branch of the N&W."]
