Norfolk and Western Wins Suit
    The federal court rendered its decision in the suit of M. L. Cantrell versus the Norfolk and Western railroad at Huntington, the court instructing the jury to bring in a verdict in favor of the defendant.  Mr. Cantrell had brought suit against the railroad company to recover $10,000 damages for the death of his child, who was killed by a Norfolk and Western freight in a tunnel near Williamson.  The evidence introduced showed that the man had no grounds for his suit.

Twelve Miles a Day
    Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Cooper and son, of Salem, who spent Thursday night in this city, left yesterday morning for Bramwell, where they are the guests of Edward Cooper.  The party left this city in Mr. Cooper's Corbin car and arrived in Bramwell about 6 o'clock last night after an all day trip to make twelve miles.
[The Coopers were well known coal operators in N&W territory around what came to be known as Coopers, WV.  The Thomas Henry Cooper home in Salem, Longwood, was an 18 room mansion designed in 1904.   The attached picture shows Longwood.  Incidentally, I had a cousin in Bluefield who was a friend of the Coopers, and she used to visit them at Longwood.  Unfortunately it burned in 1968 during renovation work (as so often happens to old structures, e.g., the recent fire at the Bedford train station).  Now, the grounds are a Salem city park known as Longwood Park.]
