At Bluefield, coal got a preliminary classification at East
Yard.? That is, tidewater coal would go in one (or more)
track,? Shenandoah Division in another,? Hyco and
Bellews Creek in another, etc.? From the yard office,
car riders would mount the cars and tie the hand
brake?to make a "coach yard coupling".? The
car riders would collect at the east end of the yard
and wait for a motor car to return them to the yard
office.? East Yard has been phased out now in
favor of a yard west of Falls Mills.

In 1970, the Radford Division supervision was making
complaints that the car riders weren't observing
safety rules.? The Safety Department assigned me
to follow up.? Turned out that the car riders were
very safety conscious, but the antics going on at
the east end when Radford Division crews had to knock
off 25 hand brakes and double over left a whole lot
to be improved.? The trainmaster stepped on a cut
lever trying to knock a hand brake off.? A Pocahontas
Div. crew cut their train off and entered the Radford
Division pull-in immediately in front of a hopper train.
The engineer shot'em and bounced the conductor
from one end of the caboose?to the door handle
on the other.? He was out of service for over a year.
Because the caboose stopped?east of "RD", the
Radford Divison had to take the injury.?
