"Whatever the reason the J's weren't used going north (or south).

The Class J's weren't used on the Winston District
because North Winston used a loop track to turn
locomotives -- no wye and no turntable. Strictly
from memory, but this loop was about 16 degrees.
To turn the J's used on the Eisenhower special,
the loop was greased and a yard engine very
carefully pulled the locomotives around one at a
time.
Class A's will clear the thru truss span over
the Dan River (near Pine Hall) in one direction,
but not the other. The bridge is located on an
"S" curve with one curve being 10.5 degrees.
