Wouldn't this steam vs diesel discussion be more focused if comparisons were made between the drawbar pull curves of the respective locos?  Horsepower is more fun, but without the use of adjectives (indicated, drawbar, shaft, rail, etc, etc....), it's a shifty term for comparison purposes.  Tractive effort isn't much better.  Such curves certainly exist for the Y6 and A, and there must be something similar available for current diesels.
