Vast Improvements Under Way by Norfolk and Western Will Soon Accomplish This Object

    Vast improvements have recently been made on the Norfolk and Western railway main line between Norfolk and Columbus, and in addition to the work on the road bed and terminals, the rolling stock of the company has been largely increased to meet the heavy demands of the business along the lines of the system.
    The most decided improvements on the Norfolk and Western have been the double tracking which has been in progress for four years and which is gradually nearing Norfolk.  It is stated that practically all of three divisions have been double tracked, these including the Pocahontas, Radford and Scioto Valley divisions.
    It is stated that the Norfolk division from Lambert's Point to Lynchburg will soon be double tracked, the double line from the coal fields to Lynchburg having already been contracted for.  This will give this great coal carrying road double lines almost from one end of the system to the other and will necessarily largely increase the coal shipments from Lambert's Point.
    It has been stated by a high Norfolk and Western official that the erection of the fourth coal pier at Lambert's Point will be a necessity when the double tracking is completed on the Norfolk division.  This pier has been long contemplated and the plans for its construction have been prepared by Chief Engineer Churchill of the Norfolk and Western.
    The company has recently added to its rolling stock sixty new locomotives of various types.  Most of these are heavy freight engines for hauling coal to Lambert's Point and to the lake ports from the west.  The remainder are being used for the passenger business of the company.
    Contracts have been awarded for one thousand new freight cars, which is a mixed order of gondolas and box cars.  In addition to this, orders have recently been given for the construction of five hundred freight cars to be built in the general shops in Roanoke.  As soon as the five hundred cars are finished by the shops it is stated that construction will begin on one thousand more.
    Contracts have been placed for twenty-five new engines in addition to those which have recently been delivered, many of them to be used to handle the increased passenger traffic which the Jamestown Exposition will bring to the road during the coming summer.
