CHANGES IN YARDS
Retrenchment Policy Still Being Pursued by N. & W.
By an order from the management, a good many changes have been
made in the yard forces at Roanoke of the Norfolk and Western
railroad. These changes were in accordance with the retrenchment
policy of the Norfolk and Western, and the men affected by the order
are reduced in both rank and income.
Despite this continued policy of reducing expenses, there are not
wanting indications that a change for the better will be manifest in
the affairs of the Norfolk and Western in the near future. At any
rate, there is apparent a spirit of hopefulness and increasing
cheerfulness. An official of the road stated this morning that it
would, of course, be some time before a complete restoration of the
activity of the past few years could be looked for, but he thought
that signs were pointing to a decided revival.
