Dreadful Accident on the South Side Railroad -- The
mail train on the South-Side RR going up to Lynchburg
was thrown off the track on Thursday morning by
running over a cow. The accident occurred about
half-past nine o'clock, two miles past Rice's Station,
in Prince Edward County, and about one mile this side
of the High Bridge. The train was going at full speed,
and was precipitated down and embankment about 30 feet
high. The engine and cars were crushed almost to
atoms, and hardly a passenger on the train escaped
injury.

A number of the Stockholders of the road were on board
returning to their homes from our regular annual
meeting in Petersburg. One of the firemen on the
engine was instantly killed. We give below the names
of such of the passengers as were injured, furnished
us by telegraph from Farmville, to which place many of
them were carried to receive medical assistance.

Mr. Alfred King, coach maker, of Richmond, had his
head badly cut.

Mrs. Ely had her collar bone broken. mr. Ely was also
injured, but his wounds are not considered serious.
Mr. Chas.T. Venable the mail agent had his leg badly
hurt by leaping from the train. Capt. W.N. Davis,
conductor of the train received internal injuries. Mr.
L.P. Jones the Engineer, was slightly injured. Mr.
J.B. Hillard received a severe flesh wound and had his
head badly cut. Mr.F.P. Wood of Cumberland, was
severely injured. Mrs. Smith of Prospect, Prince
Edward, received a severe flesh wound. Mr. Frank
Anderson had his nose broken, and head badly cut. --
Mrs. G.M. Bruce of Lynchburg, was seriously injured.
many others whose names are unknown were more or less
injured. The down train was delayed some time by the
accident and did not arrive in Petersburg until last
night. -- from the Richmond Post.
