I love this "return to steam discussion" - it is packed with smiles, smiles
and smiles.....Yes, we all know a coal fire IS a coal fire, and it smokes
real smoke, not always black, but always, even when puffy pretty white, full
of little black specs we called soot! My RR Mother, and others living at
our home (fairly close to double freight tracks) at the time, had to scrub
the front porch big time once a year (Spring) to get that black stuff off,
not to mention the clean wash on the limes getting regularly covered with
that same soot every Monday. I love "steam" to, model it on my basement
"pike," but.......those were different times.......
(I suppose in this day of filters etc, there is a way to handle the soot -
but I liked Mike's visual - have it saved in my pictures)
Bob Nichols (actually, Jim's cousin)
