Jawn Henry telescoping a caboose? Did this really happen?

Picture and letter on page 60 of May 1958 issue of Trains. Event was
July 5, 1957. Jawn was pushing a westbound merchandise (thus on the east
slope of Blue Ridge and running backwards). Wood caboose destroyed
despite steel underframe. No one injured. Jim Nichols
It really happened. There was a picture in Trains shortly afterward.
Can't remember which issue, but if I can dig it out I will post which
