Steven,
There was documentation put out to sheath all A (plus other classes of
engines) smokeboxes but I believe they just never got time to do it. The steam
engines were running out of time and many of the A's were retired before the
class Y engines. Most if not all of the Y6's got the smoke box covered, only
one for sure Y6a 2159 and possibly 2170 were covered and all but two Y6b's
were sheathed. If steam would of stayed around for another 5 or 10 years all the
above classes would have gotten a sheathed smokebox.
Anytime you hold heat in you increase the engines efficiencies that was why
the fire box was covered when built. The Western Maryland, to mention one,
sheath the smoke box and firebox on most of their steam engines.
