1907 - A Monument to Mr. Kimball

In my opinion the NS building is much prettier. The inside of it is spectacular.

Bad thing about banks, they keep changing names. The other one was the Dominion Tower, then the First Union tower, now the Wachovia tower. Who knows what it will be in another ten years.

In reference to my message yesterday about the inscription on the Fredrick
J. Kimball fountain monument, I took the attached picture this morning. The
high, circular trough on the near side was for horses (water still flows
into the trough from the lion's mouth; where are the horses?) and the two
low objects at the extreme right and left are water troughs for dogs. Thus,
the appropriateness of the inscriptions about animals from Coleridge's poem.

The NS office building is in the background. Incidentally, I once heard a
local architect comparing this NS office building with what is now knows as
the Wachovia Bank tower building which dominates the downtown Roanoke
skyline, and he said that the NS building was a much better building. I
don't know the details, so this is just for what it is worth.
