Movement to Denounce the Roads for Their High Rates to the Fair.

    Richmond, Va., March 11 -- Special -- While a movement is on foot 
in several quarters today to have meetings held for the purpose of 
denouncing the Chesapeake & Ohio and the Norfolk & Western railroads 
for their high rates for the Jamestown Exposition, so far as can be 
learned these efforts have not taken definite shape or produced results.
    The Travelers Protective Association will probably take the 
matter up in its executive board within the next few days, and then 
decided on what is best for the traveling men to do in the case. The 
Chamber of Commercem Post A, of the Travelers and members of several 
other organizations have been approached relative to announcing a 
meeting similar to that held in Norfolk and for the purpose of 
determining on some course of retaliation against the Chesapeake & 
Ohio, since that road is regarded here as the principal factor in 
fixing these rates in connection with the Norfolk & Western.
    President George W. Stevens of the Chesapeake & Ohio, when asked 
today regarding the matter of rates to the Jamestown Exposition, gave 
out the following statement:
    "The officers of the Chesapeake & Ohio think the rates announced 
are entirely reasonable. They have as yet received no evidence that 
their conclusions are untrue. The round trip rate for a day's trip to 
Norfolk or to the exposition grounds is one-half of the present 
regular rate and fixes the tariff between the two cities for seven 
months for all who can make the trip in one day. The round trip 
ten-day ticket fixes the rate on all other travel between the two 
cities. If the Sunday excursion business is continued the rate will 
be made reasonable.
