RAILROAD NOTES
Charles Churchill, chief engineer advises that the Norfolk and
Western has the following new work under way. A double track on
improved line and grades between Forest and Montvale, Va., 27 miles.
The grades will be reduced to about one third of those on the present
line and the curvature will be reduced to about .4 of that on he
present line. A low-grade line is being constructed between Concord
and Forest, 22 miles, on which the effective grades are about 40 per
cent of those on the present line. This work will be completed by
next fall. Between Davy and Iaeger, W. Va., 7 miles of second track
are in progress, on which there are two tunnels. The work of
enlarging the division yards at Roanoke; and Bluefield and
Williamson, W. Va., which has been in progress for some time, will be
completed by July 1. The following double-track work has been
undertaken this year: At Welch, W. Va., 1-1/2 miles, including a
tunnel 1,300 feet long; between Claren and Wilmore, W. Va., seven
miles, including four tunnels with an aggregate length of 3,650 feet;
west of Iaeger, W. Va., three miles of second track, and west of
Devon, W. Va., eight miles second track. All of these sections of
second track are on improved alignment and grades.
