Abe:
I made it to the archives Saturday and reviewed some Radford Division
timetables
1901-1915. There were coaling facilities at Elliston until 1905. Light
engines
(pushers) were allowed to move west ONLY in trains Roanoke - Christiansburg,
and Lurich - Bluefield. Eastbound light engines could move only in trains
East Radford to Christiansburg. Engines returning Christiansburg - Roanoke
or
Bluefield - Lurich could do so only after checking train register and
receiving
orders (EXCEPT: Light engines could operate Bluefield to Jug Neck without
orders).
As time went by, these instructions were modified so that no "run" order was
necessary. There WAS a paragraph in the General Instructions that indicated
when
an engine transferred from the rear to the head that signals HAD to be
exchanged. It was in one of the Radford Division timetables that I saw
reference
made to "middle" orders, yet rule books never provide a definition of a
"middle" order.
