Whither the Link and Pin ?

In 1952, the Diamond and Caldor Railroad had the distinction of being the
last common carrier railroad that was 100% link and pin. This was a
logging railroad owned by the California Door Co. near Placerville that
had avoided federal inspection for 50 years even though they were listed
as a common carrier. When faced with the expense of converting to modern
couplers, they ceased rail operations and switched to trucks.
