N&W "Fire" Engines ???

One of our enginemen is the town Fire Chief.  If he brings his run in early 
and sees me in the office, he aways stops in for a chat.  Today he dropped by 
and the conversation turned to the fact that some railroad locomotives were 
fitted up with fire fighting apparatus.

Two questions for those who have Tiptoed Through the Literature...

1.  Did the N&W ever have engines thusly equipped, and if so, on what 
territory were they assigned?

2.  How did the equipment work?  By a steam pump, or on the injector 
principle?
