The 604 was first retired in 10-1958 and beginning in 1-1959 the others followed until 10-1959. The order and date that they were retired was:
604 10-31-58
602 1-8-59
607 2-25-59
601, 613 3-27-59
603 4-24-59
606, 608 5-22-59
609 5-25-59
600, 605 6-16-59
610 8-24-59
612 8-25-59
611 10-27-59
They were retired at either Portsmouth, Williamson, Bluefield, Shaffers Crossing, Crewe or Lamberts Point. My sources do not show that any were sold for scrap and therefore would have been scrapped at the Roanoke Shops soon after retirement.

Gary,
I will research your question about which was scrapped first. But I can answer that all 14 of the J tenders did receive the doghouse and A-tank connections before their scrappings.

Does anyone know which of the 14 J's was the first to feel the heat of a scrappers torch, I am looking for a scrap date, not a retirement date. Also did this J carry a doghouse on her tender to the grave with her??
Many thanks
Gary Price
