All,
For clarification, there is no dump loop at the Duke Power Belews Creek Steam Plant. The pushers are required to assist the train up the grade of the Belews Creek Spur. The pushers are removed from the rear of the train after the entire length is inside the plant grounds. The lead consist is removed from the front of the train and is returned toward the location of the pushers using a run-around track. The plant switcher is used to spot individual cars in the dumper. Often the five locos (two pushers and three from the lead consist) are used as the lead consist for the next empties returned north.

John,
Looks like I need to finish the story I started. Northbound empties on the Pumpkin Vine pass straight through the diamond at JK, then turn west onto the N&W main line.
One other interesting note about the returning empty train. According to Harry Bundy, the pushers drop off the rear of the train when they reach Belews Creek. The rest of the train proceeds around a loop to dump the coal. When the train exits the loop, the pushers are waiting to be placed at the front of the train. Thus all five engines are on the front of the returning train of empties.
I too am interested if this train originates west of Roanoke, or is it made up at the South Roanoke Yard from coal brought down from Bluefield? Either way, it passes through South Yard.

Hi Lister's
Thanks to Ron Davis, I now know how the Belews Creek coal train gets out of Roanoke. Do any of you know where the train originates from? Does the empties do just the reverse to go back to be loaded again?
Thanks in advance,
John Hecker
