And then I note, on a picture of a Van Swearingen (sp?) Berkshire, what 
appears to be a side check mounted about 3/4 the way up the boiler 
side, at about the water line, I'd think.

I think that top feeds came in in the mid(?) '30s.  The Niagara picture 
I have shows no feed piping at all - under  the jacket, I would assume.
