Mallet Engines on the Saltville Branch - When?

As of a year ago, the rails were still in place when I visited on the way to the N&WHS convention. The right-of-way was overgrown with fairly large trees and brush in the spots I observed, though. In the summer, I had to hunt hard to find the r-o-w.

    When I walked the Saltville branch in 1993 I noticed that the vast majority of the ties had 52 or 53 date nails in them, so that may have been part of the upgrade to allow for heavier tonnage.
