Jimmy:In addition to the 24-RL brake, there was one more applicationthat most N&W diesels had that the steam engines didn't --dynamic brake.  After a week of refereeing a World War betweenthe Radford Division and Bluefiled Terminal, I was able to gethome by riding a coal train Bluefield tro Roanoke.  On duty at12:30 PM, it took until 5:30 PM to double over and test air.Descending from the tunnel at Merrimac with the dynamic brakeengaged, the speed got to 52 MPH (timetable speed restriction of40 MPH) and only then did the eingineer's hand drop to the big brake.And the train tied up on the 14-hour law entering South Yard.Hmmm - 14 hours to make 100 miles.
