Matt
Since you have learned a lot about diesels recently, does that mean you are changing your 1938 era to 1978?Inquiring minds would like to know!

Today this photo popped up on the Fallen Flags Facebook group, and I thought of this discussion- especially since it includes 1013 (I learned a lot about diesels in the last ten days!)

Chris,
Yes........it was very common for the N&W and NW paint schemes to peel or flake off NKP and WAB units exposing a lot of the NKP or WAB original paint. Proper prepping might make a new coat of paint adhere better and last longer!!!!!!!! It made for some rough looking units and didn't help N&W's public image much either!!!!!!

All,
This discussion brings back a lot of memories for me growing up along the N&W and seeing a mixture of blue and black paint in locomotive consists. It was a stark contrast to the mostly homogeneous black and white NS consists of today with the exception of an occasional heritage engine.
One of the most memorable sightings that I experienced occurred on my way to school one morning in third grade. My mother was driving me to school and we had to wait on an EB at the west road crossing in Davy. One of the trailing locomotives in the consist was ex-NKP C420 2578.
The engine was painted in the 1971 black and white scheme, but it had an oddity. The large white “NW” on the side of the long hood was completely gone. What was visible in place of the missing herald and its surrounding paint were the words “Plate Road”. “Plate Road” no longer appeared yellow; it looked white, but the font was undeniable. I wish I could’ve gotten a pic but this was 3 or 4 years b.c. for me (before camera). Thanks to all for an awesome discussion.
Thank Ya’n Out,

As for 1013 I have one shot that shows it in what appears to be faded blue but other shots that clearly appear to show it in black??????

It looks to be badly faded Pevler Blue with a large swath of rust along the mid section of the engineers side long hood. I’d be surprised if it ever received any additional paint before it was sold. In the prior summer of 1980, I got a shot of the 1007 in the same vicinity. It was wearing a somewhat uncouth hybrid paint scheme. The paint was weathered black with a dulux gold half moon herald and road number on the cab side yet the engineers side long hood was adorned with the Fishwick era large white “NW”. I don’t ever recall seeing another paint job quite like it!

The only thing I can find is a photo of it stored at Gowand, NY taken in July, that shows it continuing to deteriorate with lots of rusty paint. If it needs wheel work, it likely may not be able to move or interchange without that work being done.
