As an aside, when LifeLike (Proto2000) wanted to produce the SD-9 in HO
scale, Nolen Null of LifeLike contacted me; he knew there was at least one
SD-9 unit in Roanoke and asked if I thought it would be possible to go down
and photograph it in detail.  I contacted Bob Bowers who had a contact with
an NS official involved with motive power.  Long story short, Nolen and I
drove to Roanoke from Maryland one Saturday evening and spent the night at
the then downtown Holiday Inn; we met Bob and his NS contact for breakfast
Sunday morning and then went behind the East End Shops and Motive Power
building where the SD-9 was sitting.

I'm not sure how much Bob told his NS contact about our mission; we spent a
lot of time on the ground photographing the unit (this was before digital
photography); after awhile Nolen and I climbed up the end ladder and got on
the roof to take more photos; Bob would later tell me this gave lots of
angst to his NS contact; the contact wasn't worried if we fell off the
unit, but was worried that someone would see us fall!

We survived our roof adventure to the relief of Bob's friend.
