10-1-1 what for?

Hi,
Yeah I noticed the windows when I was looking at pictures. I decided
against that level of surgery on this car. I wreaked one car already this
week trying to make a Budd 10-6. Boy did a sharp chisel not work as well as
I'd hoped.
Does anyone know what trains they were on or how they were used?
Another random question: how big of a deal was it to reserve the rooms in
those things? Where they sold out and hard to get or just to expensive?
