I am very surpised in this era that y'all go on accepting repaints of hoppers that are NOTHING like N&W hoppers . . . when that incredibly individual nature of the hoppers was what made the N&W so different.
I don't model HO, but honestly, get past it.

What's really a shame is the producer is Scale Trains! They pride themselves on "rivet counter accurate" models then produce the same type of cars we've had since the 1950s. One model-30 roads! On size fits all!
The MTH Powhatan Arrow trains cars they are now producing are the only plastic cars I know that are true N&W prototypes.? I have not seen them by either company so I can't say much but they look pretty good to me. I won't get in to colors as that's a losing battle for discussion.
Division Point, Roanoke Rails and Railworks have produced accurate N&W cars in brass but the RR ones are very hard to find as well as the RW cars. Prices are out of most of our reach too especially the DP models. The DP models are a disgrace, to me, with their paint inaccuracies. How can one produce such fine, exacting models and blow it when it comes to the paint job and STILL charge upwards of $800?
Anyway, as bad as these new Scale Trains/Fox Valley cars are they are very nice looking models and since we have no other option will have to suffice.

There is a backstory on the original MTH cars and dies. The late Charlie Schlotthober recounted how the original owner of the company had wanted his set of the brass N&W Overland Models cars, which Sam Putney had worked with years before (I might have provided some information on those as well), which were truly excellent. Charlie said he?d be glad to lend them his set to take measurements, but he wanted it back after they were done. They said, No, you do not understand. We are going to tear them apart to copy them exactly. So he ended up selling his set (for a decent amount of money), as I think he likely had another set already.
Years ago, when I was shopping for a large flatbed printer for my former job, we visited several print shows to examine the various printers available. Now, these are printers that cost between $30,000 and $500,000, but there is a variety of slightly off-brand printers that fall within the lower end of the scale, yet resemble the higher-dollar name-brand machines remarkably. I asked how this was, as the design material was copyrighted. The people representing the Far East manufacturers said something on the nature of ?Ah, copy, right?? I worked with our printer for almost eight years. The manuals were truly horrible; poor translations to almost pidgeon English made it nearly amusing, but not.
So, the same story applied to the MTH cars. They are indeed nice, I had two sets, one in blue, one in Tuscan, sold them both.

The ScaleTrains/FoxValley/MTH streamlined cars are accurate for the
Arrow.
There have been a few Walthers cars, mainly Pennsylvania, that are
correct for N&W, like the P-S 10-6 sleeper and B60b/BEk baggage cars.
Con-Cor also did a series of short PRR cars that are correct, or at
least close enough, to ex-PRR cars N&W bought in the 30s.
Not unlike cabooses, given the unique nature of most railroads'
passenger cars, modelers of most railroads have to make do with
stand-ins. Having the Arrow cars and a few ex-PRR cars is actually a
blessing for N&W modelers. Southern, ACL, MKT, Northern Pacific,
Wabash, and a host of others, good luck.
