Good Afternoon,

I'm finally get back to dealing with my VGN EL-3A models, once I get them running right as a set I will turn my attention to the cosmetics and getting them to pull trains.

My questions are 1 for prototype and one for modelling, hence the cross post.

Prototype question:

What colour were the roofs and rooftop running boards?

I ask as mine have been painted gloss black, yellow window surrounds, oxide red roof and grey walkways.

I've searched archives online and found no painting/lettering diagrams for the EL-3As, the colour pictures (as ever don't focus on the roofs) seem to suggest dark roofs, maybe this is due to dirt? Not like they belching black smoke extra and soot covering the roofs... one picture Slide - RC01285 shows a noticeable contrast of the roof to the black semi gloss body.

Modelling question.

My models are Alco products (Rok-Am built) and the couplers on the end units to connect to the train have been glued on! Not the first time I have come across this but normally after prising the boxes off and cleaning the glue residue there is some kind of mount to work with... Not so. A clearance hole for the underside of the light fixing and nothing else.

I can't find any good pictures online of the underside/mounting arrangement for couplers on these models. Did they have any mounting provision? Was it a separate plate that is missing from mine or were we always supposed to glue couplers to the chassis?

Has anyone else come up with a solution? I can't believe i'm the first person to actually want to pull a train with my models...

Any help appreciated.

Regards

Martin Ford
