USRA "Light" Mountain boiler would not be big enough for a K1.

Roger,It seems to me that you are assuming that everyone would be using the same diameter boiler, which may not be the case.

Unfortunately there is no sand dome like that. There are a couple squared off looking IC ones but they aren't big enough or have the correct shape/contours. I've been hoping someone would make one in 3d printing. The plans are out there and whatever they would require. I finally found a KEY K-1 and have thought about trying to make a mold of the dome and cast one in resin for my long awaiting 4-8-2.

For me I turned a Bowser USRA 4-8-2 into a K2. I used a powerhouse tender and upgraded to a Helix Humper motor and re-quartered using my rare Brazelton AutoQuarter. I swapped to multi part siderods and fabricated a pilot.  George Hughes took my mid 1930’s era loco and passenger consist to the NWHS convention in I think 1991-2.  Everything was lettered in the earlier Norfolk & Western.  That engine could pull 20+ heavyweight Atherns.

Yep,I’ve thought the same thing about that old Bowser sand dome as I’ve eyed for years kitbashing a Key K2a into a K1. It would require some filing to better replicate the N&W sand dome, but it seems doable. Of course, I haven’t figured out an easy solution for the “sport model” welded cab either.

I’ve been trying to find better photos.

Does a source exist for an HO scale K1 sand dome from after the rebuild?  Maybe I’ve missed it, but I’ve never seen one from the brass casting companies.  Has anyone ever tried, or seen, a 3d printed version?
