Wally,
Similar to the American multiple valve front end throttle, the
Bradford Throttle moved the throttle valve that had previously been
located in the steam dome, which was before the saturated steam entered
the superheater, to a position at the front of the boiler where it was
located after the superheater. Among other things, this should have made
the locomotive quicker to respond to throttle openings by having
superheated steam quickly available to move to the cylinders. Before,
with the throttle valve located in the steam dome, when the throttle was
closed, the superheater system was without steam and one had to wait for
the pressure and superheated steam to build up between the steam dome
and cylinders.
