 Tom
If I was a youngster like you (I'm almost 73) I would really be into learning about 3D printing. If you are on some of the O scale FB groups, you have seen the outstanding quality of work being done today. I believe this will replace kits and kit- building in the future, especially in the larger scales. I'm like you, can't bring myself to paying $300 for a brass car-but if I really wanted it- I would. Glad to hear you are an O scale 2 railer. People have been saying the scale is dead. I disagree! I think its future is very bright! In the next 10 years there will be a TON of O scale on the market at bargain prices. At Chicago I have picked up Atlas cars for a song. Can't believe what some HO scale engines are going for nowadays. Okay, so they have all the bells, whistles, lights, etc., etc., but they will never have the MASS that O scale models so well display.  I'm a regular at Chicago and Parma O shows. Will be trying the new one in Indy on the 20-21st of this month.O is the way to go!

JimI am into O scale 2 rail.
However even though I have reached the age of 61, I can still not see myself spending 300.00 for a brass H2 hopper no matter the detail level. That said I do have a bunch of incorrect hopper cars painted N&W. What I would like is a return ( in O scale) to kits which are mostly correct for a particular car. Not museum quality because I also want to operate and switch them on a layout.
So I’m in the Layout group.

It has occurred to me that one way of grouping modelers is bythe fidelity/price of model that they are interested in.

One group might bemore interested in building fleets of cars to fill the yards on their layoutsand may be willing to trade off some level of detail that may not be readily noticeablefrom arm’s length or further, for affordability.  According to what I have seen recently theprices of such models range from the low $20, where some assembly is requiredand decoration may be less than perfect, to the latest releases from the majorplayers like Walthers that are RTR and beautifully decorated with prices up toaround $50.

Another group is looking for a modeling challenge and/or acontest-level model.  Manufacturers suchas Westerfield, F&C and the new 3D printers like Plate C produce this typeof model which normally requires several hours of modeling time tocomplete.  By the time you purchaseappropriate trucks, couplers, paint, decals etc. for these kits, you arelooking at $70 or more but when you finally look at that finished car in allits glory, the feeling of pride in accomplishment is second to none.

Many of us, I for one, fall into both groups.  I am finishing up a Plate C, G-12 (videocoming soon) that I will bring to the convention next year, however given the numberof hours I have put in, I won’t be building another.  So, if I were to decide I wanted severalG-12s for my layout I would need to look elsewhere.

I would like to hear from each and every one of you as towhether you consider yourself to be in the “layout” group, the “contest” groupor “both”.  This should help give me somedirection for future projects for the society model committee.

Thank you in advance for your feedback/help,

Jim Cochran
