Thanks for the links, Rob. I checked out a couple of Barbatos Rex’s videos. I think we all have our go-to sources for inspiration, guidance or general information. There are two sources that influenced what I use for airbrushing today.
Two posts on the doogsmodels sites were very helpful in getting a better understanding of airbrushes, primers and thinners, and cleaning:
https://doogsmodels.com/2016/09/07/airbrushing-a-deep-dive/#Part2
https://doogsmodels.com/2016/09/09/airbrushing-cleaning-the-damn-thing/
As you can tell by the title of the second one, the writer is a user of blunt language, but the information provided is first rate, well founded in experience and concise. These posts influenced my chose of materials (paints and thinners)
The second source is Paul Budzik’s website and YouTube channel, specifically his playlist on airbrushes. Unlike Doog, Paul’s presentation is very proper, and with excellent yet concise demonstrations and explanations. His videos led to an awareness of spray guns for hobby use and a purchase of a second airbrush with a wider spray pattern (Iwata HP-TH) that I use for 90% of my airbrush work now.

Jack, some of the above deviates from your question about paints (I like Tamiya, thinned with Mr Leveler thinner), but both sources touch on it and are worth the read / watch. Both have good advice on cleaning - the hurdle that many people don’t like to approach!

There are a lot of airbrush paint suppliers catering to military modelers: the already mentioned Vallejo, AMMO by Mig, Lifecolor, Hataka, AK Interactive, Mission Models, are a few that come to mind. Another very popular modeling subject is “Gundam” – giant robots and machines from Japanese anime shows. That’s a whole world with its own specialty paint suppliers such as Sunin, SMS, and Gaia. Not all of these colors of military and Gundam paints will be appropriate for a railroad subject but some might be. Also, military and aircraft modelers have universally praised Badger Stynlrez as the best primer.

It’s interesting to just browse these sites to see what’s available. Stynlrez is available from spraygunner.com <http://spraygunner.com/>
