Airbrush Paint

[NW Modeling List]

I’m another new airbrush user. Armchair model railroader, but am building a Tamiya Sherman tank kit, the first model I’ve built in 50 years. There are a lot of airbrush paint suppliers catering to military modelers: the already mentioned Vallejo, AMMO by Mig, Lifecolor, Hataka, AK Interactive, Mission Models, are a few that come to mind. Another very popular modeling subject is “Gundam” – giant robots and machines from Japanese anime shows. That’s a whole world with its own specialty paint suppliers such as Sunin, SMS, and Gaia. Not all of these colors of military and Gundam paints will be appropriate for a railroad subject but some might be. Also, military and aircraft modelers have universally praised Badger Stynlrez as the best primer. 

 

Some sources for these paints are spruebrothers.com, megahobby.com, and usagundamstore.com . It’s interesting to just browse these sites to see what’s available. Stynlrez is available from spraygunner.com 

 

There’s a YouTube channel by a guy who calls himself Barbados Rex that is full of very educational instructional and review videos on airbrushing, airbrushes, and paints. I’ve learned a lot from him.

It is rumored that Walthers is going to continue ScaleCoat paints.

 

Vallejo is supposed to be fantastic for airbrush work on plastic and wood, or for weathering previously painted rollingstock.

A lot of paints I’ve liked have gone out of business. A couple I’ve been using with success are Tamiya paint, which is water based, which for me is easier to clean and doesn’t have the potentially harmful fumes. Badger paint is another airbrush paint that isn’t bad to use. 

That said, I’ve also used some of the Tru-Color paint, which for me required more practice to work with. It’s great color, but requires ventilation and acetone for cleanup. 

My preference is water-based paints, but brands that I’ve used through the years are mostly gone.
