        Besides the valve gear difference, the M1's also differed from the M's by having what came to be called the "poor man's feedwater heater", which is what that second dome is (a check valve which scattered the water). BTW: although newer, the M1's tended to be retired before the M's (possibly because N&W did not like Walscherts valve gear).Jim Nichols
