From nw-modeling-list at nwhs.org Sat Sep 17 22:40:10 2022 From: nw-modeling-list at nwhs.org (NW Modeling List) Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2022 22:40:10 -0400 Subject: question on BK and other early boxcars paint Message-ID: Who can tell me about early (1920-1935) box car paint on the N&W? ? I tried doing archives search this afternoon and only found much later (1964+ documents) using "painting" keyword and several attempts to narrow the results with "freight" or "box". ?I found plenty of lettering diagrams for the 20's-30's though. ? I have a several Tichy USRA boxcars that were built by a friend who had to move from HO to O due to sight issues and sold them to move scales. They were painted with a BCR base coat but not finished or lettered. ? Are the underbodies and trucks painted BCR or black? ? I cannot tell from the B&W photos I have and I don't know if there were any articles on middle steam era box car paint schemes in the Arrow before I joined. ? I have a scan I made of the model's side and how I placed my artwork to fit while still getting it as close as I can to N&W lettering (see attached PDF) and image below. ? ?I used some prototype photos and lettering diagrams ordered from the Commissary in Adobe Illustrator to mock up some lettering. ?I have the "Ghost White" Toner to print my own decals and the numbers are chosen based upon the 1934 conductor's logs by H.F. Snow I obtained in 1997. ?While "Cap'n Snow" (as I have come to call him) was a Southern Railway conductor on the Winston-Salem division, in the log books, he ran several trains that look like Greensboro to Winston-Salem yard interchanges. ?So there are a significant number of N&W cars and that is how I came to join the N&W HS several years ago (that and I'm a VT grad who spent the better part of 7 years in Blacksburg and the Roanoke valley during the 80's). ?I'm trying to build mostly models of cars that have appeared in the 1934 log books for my layout. ? Any info on paint colors for 1934 and earlier N&W boxcars and any feedback on the lettering I developed would very much be welcome. ? Dave Bott Sykesville, MD ? ? --?
