Frank
I would agree with you on how outdated the Red Ball kit is. It needs to be updated and done in O scale.Still waiting for Golden Gate/ Sunset 3rd Rail to produce those VGN battleship gons in O scale...and waiting...and waiting......

Jim Nichols, I thought you might come through.  For those of you who don't know Jim, he has a level of diligence and craftsmanship that most of us can only try to emulate.
Jim Kehn; next time we get together (we're both in Ohio)I'll show you precisely what's wrong with the Red Ball kit.  It was kind of ok when it came out, but for Concept to use the same molds currently is......tacky.

The answer is, yes, Jim Nichols has bashed a GKd by cutting down an old Athearn 50' box car. I think I even wrote it up in a long gone issue of the Arrow. It makes sense that Westerfield would have done a GKa, as the GKd would be too modern for him. But the GKd is all most of old timers ever saw, and they lasted right up to the early '50's. Trucks are a problem, but a few of them actually got Buckeyes. So you could get away with that.

Jim, old friend, I'm not arguing.  And your disbelief is understandable.  A very reliable source talked to Westerfield himself and was told that he did make a Gkd, and that after about a dozen the mold broke.  I take legends like that with a grain of salt.  But just as a check on my senility I ran down to the basement and found the one that I have.  I don't know if the new owner has redone them or plans to.
And if you browse the 'net you'll see an outfit called-IIRC--Concept models that catalogued VGN and N&W battleship gons.  We got some.  They are absolutely awful.  I got Summers and Munson to review them with me and they turned purple.  After looking at them carefully--okay, even from two feet away--they are a redo of the old Red Ball N&W battleship gon.  I doubt anyone would find them useful, unless majorly bashed, nowadays.  [Now that I've said that, I'd bet a cup of coffee that Jim Nichols has done that, but for most of us......]

Mr. Miller,
I don't believe Westerfield ever produced an N&W battleship gondola.  As Mike Shockley has pointed out, Westerfield has produced several variations of N&W hoppers.
Funaro & Camerlengo did produce a Virginian battleship gondola; is this what you are looking for?

Westerfield still makes N&W hoppers. As far as I can tell, they can be ordered on their website. Westerfieldmodels.com. There is a link to the secure store.
