The first passenger Geeps (762-767) were part of an order to completely dieselize the Shenandoah Division. They differed from the freight units only in the fact they had steam generators and water tanks (thus smaller fuel tanks). The decision to dieselize mainline passenger trains had not yet been made. When it was (the next year) it was decided to renumber the 762-767 as 500-505, regear them for higher top speed, increase size of the fuel and water tanks, and repaint them to match the newly delivered "redbirds" 506-521. Thus, all 22 passenger Geeps were alike except for the number and size of the fans. 500-505 had four 36" fans. 506-521 had two 48" fans.

All the GP9s ordered new by the N&W had dynamic brakes.  500, 600, 700,
800, and 900 series.  Those the N&W received through merger from the NKP
and Wabash didn?t have dynamic brakes.  2400, 2500, 2800, and 3400 series.

Hi Walter;

All the diesel locomotives that N&W ordered (in other words not inherited
during the 1964 merger) had dynamic brakes.

You mentioned 1955/56; at that time the N&W had:  Alco RS3 phIII, Alco
RS11, and EMD GP9 phII.  The GP9 phIII locomotives came in 1958 (maybe very
late '57).

Thank you, again, Nigel.? You answered at least 5 questions I had not
asked yet.? This is truly one of the greatest group of folks anywhere.?
I belong to several other historical societies and some of them are
terrific, but the N&W is the most informative and has some of the nicest
people I have corresponded with.? And, that is why I model the Norfolk
and Western.? Thanks again.

These 3 pix show 766 in as-delivered black with script herald, what I think
is black in 1966, then blue in 1967.  If the 1966 pic is blue, then the
color scan must be way off.  767 is the other number Walthers just announced
with DCC installed but I don't have any pix of this or the 2 non-DCC
numbers.
