Jim Nichols … thanks for the explanation; good stuff (as always). I was on the fence re: ordering a 766 but now know that it would not fit my primary era of 1957-63 but will likely have a few pieces of equipment from 60s into very early NW. Looks like I’ll stick to P2K Geeps I’ve picked up over the years, add/change details and replace bad gears.

Jim King. Your first picture is 766(1) as delivered. Notice the steam generator. It became 504 when Roanoke modified it in late 58 or early 59 to have same fuel and water capacity and gear ratio as the 506-521. Later, the WSSB 1501 became 766(2) and was repainted from WSSB gray to N&W black. So your second and third pictures are 766(2) ex WSSB 1501. Same was true for 767(1) which became 505 and WSSB 1502 which became 767(2). Interesting that Walthers chose these two numbers out of all the choices they had.

These 3 pix show 766 in as-delivered black with script herald, what I think is black in 1966, then blue in 1967. If the 1966 pic is blue, then the color scan must be way off. 767 is the other number Walthers just announced with DCC installed but I don’t have any pix of this or the 2 non-DCC numbers.
