Coach roofs

Re arch roofs, PG streamline roofs, etc. --

1) The RMC article on the streamline roof PG was in the 10/89 issue. A prequel article appeared in the 9/88 Arrow. Since the PG roof has a taller profile than the usual lightweight passenger car roof, the Northeastern wood roof required fillers at its bottom edges to bring it to proper height.

2) Turtleback arch roofs in cast resin have been sporadically available in the past, but I came up blank from previous suppliers such as NKP Car, Tom Madden, etc. in a recent search involving a different project; what was previously available in limited runs is now no longer available. I didn't check for 3D-printed at Shapeways -- maybe a possibility. I have done the cutting and splicing of an Athearn blue-box coach roof; it's a very good solution if you can find cars reasonably priced at a train show. On eBay the Athearn coaches seem to be going for $12 or so -- not an economical solution, especially if you need two of them. Bethlehem Car Works catalogs a very nice styrene turtleback roof (their part #25). Note that turtlebacks tended to vary in depth between 2'0" and 2'6" depending on the prototype; BCW's is the shallower 2'0" depth, but a workable solution for a 2'6" prototype if it's the only game in town.

Bob Chapman
