Ed:

One of the benefits of doing your own decals is that you can get decals done that don’t require piecing together road numbers. You can have the lettering any size you want, in 0.001” increments of height and width. You can kern the lettering, or perform anamorphic stretching in horizontal and vertical directions independently, of any text object, to get the lettering to be exactly the right size. You can even modify characters in a text object to create your own lettering shape (this is necessary to get exactly the right shape of T&P and PRR numerals, for instance.)

I have done black numerals on white fields, and white numerals on black fields. My CSS&SB 705 loco (attachment) has white-on-black, both in the headlamp sides and the end numbers, while my #707 (lurking behind 705) has black on white in both places. Both are per photographic documentation of their prototypes. (BTW, those toe kick-plates above each hand grab are silver decals.) I have also “subtracted” lettering from a black field, such that the lettering is clear, on the black field, when I had back-lightable numberboards. Just apply the decal to some clear or frosted acetate, and file the acetate to shape to fit snugly in the numberboard opening. Also BTW, each half-face of 705 and 707 are single decals of the tiger-stripes. I have NO clue how my painter got them settled down on and around all the features on these faces, but IMO this looks better than masked and painted faces I’ve seen on these models.

Now, if you only have 3 locos to do, I’d recommend you look at Shellscale’s excellent sets for numberboards. If that does ya, it’s a far cheaper and less time-consuming approach to getting there. But if absolutely nothing will float your boat other than the best possible representation of what you are seeing in a specific photograph of a piece of equipment, then learning how to do your own decals is the way to go. And, the 2nd time you do custom decals for a specific feature, the learning curve is near zero, and the added investment is just the printing cost for the decal sheet.

Best,

-Eric

Folks,

Since a lot of you have been talking about decals, I have a problem that someone out there may be to help me with.

I have a bunch of Stewart F7 & F3 diesel locomotives that have the road name sponge printed at the factory,
however they do not have the locomotive numbers in the front nose of the locomotives. The road names I have
are Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, and New York Central.

What I have been looking for is some decals to number the locomotives. It looks like the number boards are 3/16 inch.

Are there decals you can recommend with a white back ground with black numbers or is your decal project an option.

Thanks

Ed wagner

I used to have one of the brass K2a's. I didn't think that it was done very well. Especially the skyline casing.

There is a brass K2 out there in small numbers. The quantity of shells for which there would be a market in plastic is in the dozens, too few for the big manufacturer but just right for 3D printers who produce to the demand. Browser produced mountain drive kits and there are still many good IHC mountains out there.

You can, however, get a K2 in O scale.

This is just a question for th group what do y’all think the odds would be that we could get a plastic or die cast model of the N&W K2 K2A Streamlined locomotives in ho scale? Thanks for your thoughts and hope everyone is doing well.

One other factor to consider when the time comes to put together the decal sheet. Do you include extra builders plates and class badges for known factory painted models that are lacking them, like the Broadway A's and J's? Bare in mind I am not expecting an answer on this, just trying to generate discussion as Shellscale and the Society decide what needs to be included in the set, and how many of each. But I do think there will be a market not just for people painting models for the first time, but also people who have either factory or custom painted models that they would want to go back and add these details to. If I have to buy 6 sets to apply builders plates to 8 engines, I will, but if I could do the same number of engines and only buy 2 sets, that would be great. It all depends on how many decals you have to arrange on the sheet, or sheets (A lot of Shellscale sets have used 2 sheets).

Also, one revision I like on the most recent Microscale sheet is they supplied black backgrounds for the builders plates, which makes a big difference if applying them to an engine with a smoke box that lacks the boiler jacketing.

While excursion era 611 decals have no interest for me I think Marty has the right idea. If going for the ultimate steam set then that should also be a part of it.

Not to open up a can of worms, because I know some people are sensitive about this, but any possibility of throwing in a couple of excursion era graphics for 611 on the decal sheet? For example, decals for the Robert Claytor plaque and the "I am the thoroughbred of steam..." sticker?

I'd buy the set either way, but if we are going for the ultimate N&W steam decal set, why not include as much as possible?

Richard and I have already been discussing this and it will be correct. Believe me.

Besides builders and class plates, I am thinking headlight number boards, number plates, all sizes and designs of steam, cabside lettering, appropriate tender tank lettering, etc. etc.

I ordered Microscale's latest revision, and while it does finally put the builders plates and class badges in more of a bronze or brass color instead of dulux gold like the lettering, it still has a poor selection of classes repesented on the plates and badges. There are no A's, and no Y's other than Y6b. Their O scale revision includes these additional classes, so it is frustrating that the HO version still does not. I've looked around but can't find any currently in production other than Microscale. I know the Champ sets don't have the plates and badges I am looking for. Are there any options besides finding an appropriately sized "A" in another set and combining it with the Microscale?
