Ho scale 611 in the 1950s

As I remember, 611-613 were built with the bell on top. But the bell did not swing. It was the more modern kind where the bell stays put and the clapper is driven. As a result, the bell gave a muted sound in that location, so they moved it to under the left steps, where it could be heard better from the ground. Since this worked out, they changed the bells on 600-610  to the stationary bell with driven clapper in the under step location, so that all 14 J's were the same.

I don’t think the bell was ever move to the front of the engine I think it was just put under there when it was built. If anyone knows differently I’d like to know also I’d like to see a photo of it if it was different. As far as the twin beam headlight I know that’s when it was put into Excursion excursion servicein the 1980#.

The bell was moved to underneath the front walkway steps on the fireman side and the chrome ring round the headlight was painted when rebuilt for excursion service.  During the last days of original service some of the covers were removed for easier access to stuff on top of the boiler.  Have a 610 from BLI just because of the ‘valve gear problem' that happened while the PRR was testing it on their rails.

The sticker is awful like the twin beam headlight and the red stripe A-tender.

The sticker was put on....unfortunately......in April or May of 2015 in Spencer NC as the restoration was being wrapped up.

The Spirit of Roanoke lettering on the cab is an artifact applied by the VMT in very recent years (probably with the last five or six years) after it was put under the train shed.  Bev Fitzpatrick was the Executive Director of VMT. At this point it was the property of the museum.

I’m no expert, but I surmise that in addition to the Spirit of Roanoke designation for the refurbished/restored 611, the actual black paint on the restored (excursion version) of the 611 was glossier than the paint on the engines while they were in service. The available on-line videos of 611 certainly bear that out.

I don't know, what do you think Bill?
