Actually , the location of the bell on the 611 is the original location.  The earlier engines had the bells on top of the boilers and they were later relocated, but 611-613 always had thier bells mounted behind the steps as it currently is.  Some of the war-time engines may have had the bells mounted low when they were streamlined the first time but I don't recall and don't have any of my books close by.  There are some others on here who may know. Thanks,Will Sadler

The sticker was put on....unfortunately......in April or May of 2015 in Spencer NC as the restoration was being wrapped up. Thanks,Will Sadler -------- Original message --------From: NW Modeling List <nw-modeling-list at nwhs.org> Date: 5/17/20 3:49 PM (GMT-05:00) To: NW Modeling List <nw-modeling-list at nwhs.org> Subject: Re: Ho scale 611 in the 1950s The Spirit of Roanoke lettering on the cab is an artifact applied by the VMT in very recent years (probably with the last five or six years) after it was put under the train shed.  Bev Fitzpatrick was the Executive Director of VMT. At this point it was the property of the museum.  Sent from my digital telegraph keyJim StapletonOn May 17, 2020, at 10:17, NW Modeling List <nw-modeling-list at nwhs.org> wrote:On 5/16/2020 4:44 PM, NW Modeling List via NW-Modeling-List

I’m no expert, but I surmise that in addition to the Spirit of Roanoke designation for the refurbished/restored 611, the actual black paint on the restored (excursion version) of the 611 was glossier than the paint on the engines while they were in service. The available on-line videos of 611 certainly bear that out.
I don't know, what do you think Bill?Jimmy Lisle
