I forgot to mention that there are several videos that are very helpful for modeling the Abingdon Branch. They include, Herron’s Pocahontas Glory V1 and V8, Railroad Video Productions Vintage Steam of the N&W, Mainline Motion Pictures N&W Steam in the 1950’s and JMJ Vintage Rails V7.

You can see some of the photos plus the layout map in the April 2020 MR. Some more photos are on the MR online website. Also, the home page photo being used by the Gateway NMRA National Convention (now cancelled) shows an M near Creek Jct. A few more photos can be found on the website for the 2020 National Narrow Gauge Convention in St. Louis (still a go at this point—fingers crossed.) I basically used the materials you listed as reference to model the structures. The Abingdon Branch is my favorite portion of the layout—-wish I had room to model more of it!

While my plan will be based on the branch (single track, sharp curves, lots of scenery, minimal industry), I am “enhancing” the prototype’s customer base to include a coal mine or two and West Jefferson customers who handled retail coal and tank cars (coal/oil dealer with trestle), covered hoppers (cement?) and a team track to load untreated crossties, which was a common sight in many 1950s trains. If I can fit it in, I may create a small cattle pen and chute to justify an occasional stock car (yes, I read the current ARROW with great interest!).

I have a 13x13 room with access via an S-curved, drop down section thru the room’s door to a 16 ft long shelf that will be used for staging.

I’m interested in modeling both Abingdon stations as building flats to make room for a couple yard tracks and would use the lowest layout level for mainline action between Bristol and points east, just like the MR article.
