CABOOSE ROOF COLOR

As to a dark brown paint, I am currently in a quandary myself.  I used to mix old Floquil black with "roof brown" until I had a dark enough shade to suit my memory of how roofs looked (particularly passenger cars.) Later, Floquil changed the shade of "roof brown" to something much lighter. Stumped for awhile, I finally decided to mix black with "tuscan." That worked pretty good. But now there is no Floquil. I have not had much success spraying the water based paints, so don't have any experience or suggestion there.
But note, N&W painted just the roof sheets themselves - not the facia. Which is why many pictures don't give you much indication of the roof color. And in later steam era years, they coated the roof with either "Dednox" or "Mortex." These were asphalt compounds, so the result was more dark gray than brown. Check out page 47 in Norfolk & Western in Color Vol. 1.

Subject: Re: CABOOSE ROOF COLOR Roof color depends on time period and lettering scheme. If you are talking steam era, the roof color is brown or near black (depending on weathering). Later paint schemes had red roofs, and some had galvanized roofs.

Gentlemen - as I work on my Laserkit (#864) and GloorCraft (Kit #312) I seek your advice on the correct color of the caboose roof.  Research into the fine works by Jim Nichols (N&W In Color) and (N&W Color Guide to Freight and Psngr Equipment) reveals that most were painted black (eg 518259, 562620, 559354) but #518265 and 562723 and 557775 appear to be red.  Further complicating matters is that #559011 is some "maroon" color but this could just be the effect of rising / setting sun.  LaserKit (American Model Builders) says "roof was initially painted brown but black soon replaced that color".  GloorCraft says "the entire caboose except the handrails can be painted with Floquil R20 CABOOSE RED".
Recommendations are greatly appreciated.  Thank you.
